What are the first signs that allostatic load is rising?

The earliest reliable warning signals that your allostatic load is rising, often referred to as your physiological ‘check-engine light’, are subtle shifts that occur before you reach a state of acute burnout. Rather than dramatic crises, these first indicators tell you that your nervous system is drifting back toward chronic overload and requires intervention.

For most high-performing professionals, the four primary early warning signs are:

Sleep quality decline: Sleep is typically the first domain to degrade as allostatic load rises. This may not be dramatic insomnia, but rather a subtle shift like taking slightly longer to fall asleep, waking earlier than intended (especially between 3-5 am with an active mind), or experiencing a decline in your morning energy quality.

Jaw tension upon waking: Finding that you are clenching or holding tension in your jaw when you wake up is one of the most sensitive early indicators that sympathetic stress activation is intruding into your overnight rest.

Reduced social warmth: You may notice an early flattening of your genuine relational availability. Interactions might start to feel slightly more transactional or functional, and genuine humour, warmth, or interpersonal ease becomes less accessible.

Mid-afternoon energy collapse: Experiencing disproportionate, heavy fatigue in the 2-4 pm window indicates that your system is drawing on its emergency reserves rather than recovering cleanly overnight.

In addition to these four core, other common early warning signs include:

  • Your breathing is becoming shallow and shifting up into the chest.

  • The return of gut symptoms like bloating or irregularity.

  • An inability to genuinely switch off or downregulate during your downtime.

  • Heightened sensory sensitivity or reactivity to noise, interruptions, and conflict.

  • Decision fatigue arrives earlier in the working day.

When two or more of these signals appear simultaneously for three or more consecutive days, it is a direct physiological instruction. It tells you that your system is under load and you need to immediately reinstate your regulatory practices your daily breathing resets and sleep preparation protocols. This will stabilise your system before the load compounds.
